Why Every Website We Build Runs on Green Hosting

Most people never think about where their website actually lives. It feels like it just exists, somewhere out there in “the cloud.” But every page load, every image, every form submission is being handled by a physical server, in a physical building, drawing real electricity from a real grid. Globally, data centres are on track to use around 2% of the world’s electricity in 2026, and that figure is expected to double by 2030 as demand from AI and high-performance applications keeps climbing.
That’s not a reason to panic about the internet. It is a reason to be deliberate about where you host. So when we chose the infrastructure behind every website we build, sustainability wasn’t a box-ticking afterthought, it was one of the deciding factors.
What “green hosting” actually means
It’s a term that gets used loosely, so it’s worth being precise about it. Green hosting means the servers your website sits on are powered by renewable energy, wind, solar, hydro, rather than electricity generated from fossil fuels. The best providers don’t just claim this, they back it with verified renewable energy agreements covering their entire operation, not a partial offset scheme bolted on for good PR.
That distinction matters. A lot of “eco-friendly” hosting claims amount to a small percentage of green energy and a large amount of marketing. We wanted the real thing.
Why we host with Equinix and UK-based providers
We use a range of UK-based cloud hosting providers, including Equinix, chosen because they’re green, high-performance, scalable and secure, in that order of non-negotiability. Every one of Equinix’s UK data centres runs on 100% renewable energy, a commitment that sits inside their wider Future First strategy and a stated goal of reaching net zero by 2040. Their newer UK sites go further still, using dry, air-based cooling that needs no water at all, which matters in a country that’s increasingly conscious of where its water goes.
None of that would count for much if the performance wasn’t there too. We needed data centres built for genuine scale and resilience, the same infrastructure that supports major financial institutions and global enterprises, with the redundancy and security standards to match. Choosing green hosting was never a trade-off against quality. If anything, the providers doing sustainability properly tend to be the ones investing properly in everything else.
The benefits go beyond the planet
Think of hosting as the foundation nobody sees. It’s not the bit clients get excited about in a design review, but everything else you build is only as good as what it’s standing on. Get that foundation right and it pays off in ways that have nothing to do with carbon at all.
Reliability. Renewable-powered doesn’t mean lower-spec. The providers we work with run enterprise-grade infrastructure with the uptime and failover businesses actually need.
Scalability. Whether a client’s site gets steady traffic or sudden spikes, the same infrastructure needs to flex without a rebuild.
Security. Green data centres built to this standard come with the physical and network security compliance that matters for client data.
Reputation. Increasingly, sustainability isn’t just an internal value; it’s something clients ask about directly, and something their own customers are starting to notice too.
It’s not a nice-to-have anymore
A few years ago, green hosting was a genuine point of difference. Today, it’s becoming an expectation. More procurement processes now include questions about a supplier’s environmental footprint, and more end users are quietly checking whether the brands they buy from are backing up their sustainability claims with substance, not just a leaf icon in the footer.
